What Affects Your Build Cost?

Lumber Prices

Lumber is 50-60% of total cost. Prices fluctuate seasonally — spring and summer tend to be higher. Buying from a lumberyard (vs. big box store) can save 15-20%.

Your Location

Prices vary widely by region. Pacific Northwest lumber is cheaper near mills. Urban areas often have higher prices. Rural areas may lack specialty items.

DIY vs. Contractor

Building yourself saves 40-60% compared to hiring a contractor. The Thios handbook is designed for intermediate DIY builders — no specialized skills required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a building permit? +

It depends on your local regulations. Many areas allow structures under 120 sq ft without permits, but rules vary by location. Check with your local building department before you start building.

How long does it take to build? +

Most builders complete the basic frame in 2-4 weekends working solo. With a helper, you can finish faster. Take your time—there's no rush. Many builders spread it out over a month or two, working at their own pace.

Can I move it after it's built? +

Yes! The modular design can be mounted on casters (wheels), a small trailer, or a leveling plinth. The entire structure weighs only ~180 lbs, making it portable. You can disassemble and reassemble if needed.

Is it weatherproof? +

The geodesic shape is naturally weather-resistant. Overlapping outer panels shed water like shingles—rain runs off, not in. The curved dome profile deflects wind shear rather than fighting it. And by sitting off the ground on a foundation or platform, you get better airflow and easier thermal management. Add your choice of siding and insulation based on your climate.

What tools do I need? +

Basic carpentry tools: table saw or miter saw, drill/driver, level, tape measure, square, and clamps. If you've built IKEA furniture, you can build this. No specialized equipment required.

Can I customize the design? +

Absolutely! Licensed under CERN-OHL-S-2.0, you're free to modify, improve, and even sell what you build—as long as you share improvements back to the community. We provide editable CAD files so you can adapt the design to your exact needs. Learn more about our open source commitment.

If it's open source, why pay? +

The designs are free on GitHub forever—that's the point. The handbook saves you 40+ hours of figuring out assembly sequences, material sourcing, and avoiding our mistakes. You're paying for the shortcut and supporting development of the next sphere, not licensing the IP.
