The Open-Source Modular Building System

One construction grammar for every structure. Standardized panel geometry, interchangeable modules, standard dimensional lumber. Design anything, build it yourself.

Why an Open Building System?

Every DIY building project starts from zero — new plans, new materials, new techniques. There is no shared standard for small structures. The Thiosphere changes that: standardized panel geometry, interchangeable modules, and one construction grammar that works for saunas, offices, greenhouses, and anything else you design.

What You Get

Everything you need to go from idea to finished structure

🔧

How It Works

1

Design

Configure your layout in the free 3D tool. Choose modules, materials, and placement.

2

Plan

Get your bill of materials, cut list, and assembly sequence. Order materials locally.

3

Build

Follow the step-by-step handbook. Standard tools, standard lumber, no special skills.

Why Thiosphere?

One Grammar, Every Structure

Standardized panel geometry means every module connects to every other module. Design once, reconfigure forever.

Hardware-Store Materials

Standard 2×4s, plywood sheets, and common fasteners. No exotic materials, no proprietary parts, no vendor lock-in.

3 Tools, Weekend Build

Circular saw, drill, measuring tape. If you can build a bookshelf, you can build any Thios structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

A circular saw, drill/driver, tape measure, square, and basic hand tools. No CNC machines or specialty equipment required. Everything is designed for standard lumber and hardware store materials.
Yes. The modular design means you can swap windows for walls, add doors, or change roof panels at any time. Every module is interchangeable and bolts into place without permanent modifications.
It depends on your local regulations. In most areas, structures under 120 sq ft on a temporary foundation (trailer or casters) do not require a permit. Permanent foundations usually do. Always check with your local building department.
Very. The double-shell construction with mineral wool insulation (R-20) handles rain, snow, and temperature extremes. Proper sealing at panel joints and a weather-resistant exterior finish keep the interior dry and comfortable.
Most builders work solo for framing and panel assembly. You will want a second pair of hands for raising roof panels and positioning the structure on its foundation. Total build time is 40-60 hours over 3-4 weekends.

OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE

The Thiosphere™ SDK, the foundation to all our products, is open source hardware. In fact, all Thios products are. Specifically the CERN Open Hardware Licence Version 2 - Strongly Reciprocal.

That's a fancy way of saying that if you want to use our design, even for commercial purposes, you have to share your changes with everyone else.
