Basic carpentry tools: circular saw or miter saw, drill/driver, level, tape measure, square, and clamps. If you've built IKEA furniture, you can build this. No specialized equipment required.
How long does it take to build?
Most builders complete the basic frame in 2-4 weekends working solo. With a helper, you can finish faster. Take your time—there's no rush. Many builders spread it out over a month or two.
Can I customize the design?
Absolutely! Licensed under CERN-OHL-S-2.0, you're free to modify, improve, and even sell what you build—as long as you share improvements back to the community. We provide editable CAD files so you can adapt the design to your exact needs.
Do I need a building permit?
It depends on your local regulations. Many areas allow structures under 120 sq ft without permits, but rules vary. Check with your local building department. We provide documentation to help with permit applications if needed.
What if I get stuck during the build?

Is this weatherproof?
The SDK is the structural frame. You add your choice of siding, roofing, and weatherproofing based on your climate and budget. The handbook includes recommendations for different weather conditions and climates.
Can I add electricity/plumbing?
Yes! The modular design accommodates electrical and plumbing runs. For electrical work, hire a licensed electrician. For plumbing, consult local codes. The handbook shows where utilities can be integrated.

The Thiosphere™ SDK, the foundation to all our products, is open source hardware. In fact, all Thios products are. Specifically the CERN Open Hardware Licence Version 2 - Strongly Reciprocal.
That's a fancy way of saying that if you want to use our design, even for commercial purposes, you have to share your changes with everyone else.
